Instructions
- 1
Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- 2
Add chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the 2 cloves of minced garlic (for sauce) and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- 3
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and let it cook for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more flavor it develops.
- 4
While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
- 5
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, combine softened butter, 2 cloves of minced garlic (for garlic bread), and chopped parsley (if using). Spread the garlic butter evenly over the cut sides of the French or Italian bread. Place bread cut-side up on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and fragrant.
- 6
Serve the cooked spaghetti topped generously with the meat sauce. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and serve with slices of garlic bread on the side.
