Instructions
- 1
Prepare the B\u00e9chamel Sauce: In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until a smooth paste (roux) forms. Gradually whisk in the warm milk, a little at a time, to prevent lumps. Continue whisking until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Remove from heat.
- 2
Preheat Oven and Assemble Sandwiches: Preheat your oven to 400 F (200 C). Lightly toast the bread slices if desired. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on two of the bread slices (optional).
- 3
Layer the Sandwiches: On two slices of bread, layer half of the ham, then a quarter cup of Gruyere cheese, then the remaining ham. Top with the other two slices of bread.
- 4
Apply B chamel and Cheese: Place the assembled sandwiches on a baking sheet. Generously spread the top of each sandwich with the prepared b chamel sauce. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of Gruyere cheese over the b chamel.
- 5
Bake until Golden: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown. For extra crispiness, you can briefly broil for the last minute, watching carefully to prevent burning. Serve immediately.
